Awareness-raising activities under the BSB-785 LitOUTer Project, completed in 2023, continue. The events, designed for young people and children, aim to protect the Black Sea ecosystem, reduce marine litter, and strengthen societal awareness.

As part of these efforts, an educational awareness event was organized at 88th Year Cumhuriyet Anatolian High School within the project scope carried out by KTÜ Sürmene Faculty of Marine Sciences. The event began with an informative presentation by Prof. Dr. Fatma Telli Karakoç on the sources, impacts, and solutions of marine litter. Following this, Prof. Dr. Coşkun Erüz addressed the threats posed by ghost fishing nets to the sustainability of the marine ecosystem. The program also featured contributions from Prof. Dr. Hacer Sağlam, Dr. Neira Purwanty Ismail, and graduate student Melike Tüysüz, who shared their knowledge and experiences.

During the training, 9th-grade students attentively followed the topics and actively asked questions, demonstrating significant interest and awareness regarding protecting marine environments. This interactive activity proved highly effective in enhancing young people’s environmental awareness, reinforcing their understanding of recycling, and motivating them to contribute to reducing marine litter.
